Theory Test Guide

What is the theory test?

The Theory test assesses your knowledge of the rules of the road, your hazard perception skills and other know how associated with riding a motorcycle. Before you can complete the practical part of your motorcycle test you must first complete and pass the theory test.

The theory test consists of two parts – a series of multiple choice questions and a hazard perception section.  In order to pass the theory test you must pass both sections. If you pass one section but fail another you will have to take the whole test again.

How is the test delivered?

The theory test is delivered via a computer. The multiple choice section involves the use of a touch screen computer and the hazard perception section uses a computer mouse. If you are unfamiliar with computers don’t worry; the test centre staff will explain how the equipment works. You will also have the opportunity to go through a practice session before the test begins.

The multiple choice section consists of 50 questions, of which you must answer 43 correct to pass. Some questions will only require you to pick one answer and others may require multiple answers. Be sure to read each question carefully. If you are unsure on the answer to a specific question there is the facility to flag the question and come back to it later. You have 57 minutes to complete this part of the test.  After you have completed the multiple choice section you may take a three minute break.

You will then move onto the hazard perception part of the test. First you will be shown a short video which explains how to answer the questions. When the test begins you will watch a series of video clips which show everyday road scenarios. Each clip will feature at least one developing hazard, and one of the clips will feature two hazards. You must recognize and respond to the hazards using the computer mouse. The earlier you respond the greater your score. You can score a maximum of five points for each hazard. Unlike the multiple choice section you will not be able to flag questions or review your answers in this section. The pass mark for the motorcycle hazard perception test is 44 out of 75.

How soon will I know if I’ve passed?

Straight away. When you have finished the test you will be given your result by a member of the test centre staff.
